Summary:
The BQ24140 is a compact, flexible, efficient, USB-friendly switch-mode charge management device for single-cell Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries used in a wide range of portable applications. The charging parameters can be programmed via the I2C interface. The IC integrates two integrated PWM controllers, power MOSFETs, input current sensing, high accuracy current and voltage regulation, and charge termination into a small WCSP package.
Battery charging occurs in three phases: regulation, constant current, and constant voltage. The input current value is automatically limited by the host. Charging is terminated when the user selectable minimum current level is reached. A safety timer with reset control provides a secure backup of the I2C interface. Under normal operation, if the battery voltage drops below the internal threshold, the IC automatically restarts the charge cycle, and when the input supply is removed, the IC automatically enters sleep mode or high impedance mode. The charge status can be reported to the host using the I2C interface. During charging, the IC monitors its junction temperature (TJ) and once TJ increases to a typical value of 125°C, the IC will reduce the charge current. To support USB OTG devices, the IC can provide VBUS (typically 5.05V) by boosting the battery voltage. This IC is available in a 30-pin WCSP package.
