Global chip sales fell in the second quarter

According to the statistics of the United States Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), compared with the first quarter, global chip sales fell 2% in the second quarter, a decrease of 0.5% compared with the second quarter of 2010.

The decline in sales was partly due to a sharp drop in demand for chips in Japan, as it is currently working on reconstruction after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The average sales for the three months (April-June) of global semiconductors in June 2011 was US$24.68 billion. This was 1.5% lower than the average sales of US$25.04 billion in the first three months (1-3 months) and 0.5% lower than the same period of last year.

In the past ten years, the global second-quarter chip sales are usually 2% or 3% higher than the first quarter. This time there has been a 2% drop, which is actually a very unusual thing.

There is evidence that the slowdown in demand for chips in Japan is the reason for the overall slowdown in sales. The SIA stated that the statistical results of SIA and world semiconductor trade in the world are not significantly different from those in the same period of last year, with the exception of Japan.

SIA said that the company’s PC update, smartphone demand and IT infrastructure expenses have made up for the weakness in consumer demand.

SIA President Brian Toohey said in a statement: "The overall sales of semiconductors have not deviated from the 5.4% growth rate forecast for 2011."

SIA and the European Semiconductor Industry Association released the Chinese rose-chip sales data in a “three-month average number icon”. This allows any given month’s sales to be compared to the average sales for the previous two months. SIA and ESIA like the current data representation because it can display the actual data smoothly, usually starting to show a trough in the quarter and peaking at the end of the quarter.
