Infineon Introduces PROFET?+2 and High Current PROFETs to Improve Energy Efficiency

Automakers hope that in-vehicle electronic systems can dramatically increase energy efficiency in as small a space as possible. Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) strongly supports this trend with the new power IC manufacturing technology SMART7. The technology was developed specifically for automotive applications such as body control modules or distribution centers. The SMART7 Power IC drives, diagnoses and protects loads in heating, power distribution, air conditioning, interior and exterior lighting, seat and mirror adjustment applications. In addition, they replace electromechanical relays and fuses in a cost-effective and reliable manner. The SMART7 is based on a thin wafer process that reduces power consumption and reduces chip size.

Based on SMART7, Infineon now offers two high-side power switch series PROFET?+2 and high current PROFET?. The SPOC?+2 multichannel SPI high-side power controller will be available within one year.

PROFET+2 enables double-digit reduction in power consumption and PCB space

The PROFET+2 product line was developed for automotive 12V lighting load applications and capacitive loads. They include halogen bulbs in interior lighting controls, interior lighting and dimming, and LED lighting. The PROFET+2 device offers state-of-the-art diagnostics and protection. They maintain package pin compatibility with previous generations of PROFET+, ensuring zero cost migration. If a single channel device is replaced by a dual channel device, there is no need to change the ECU layout and vice versa. Compared to the previous generation, the PROFET+2 device has a package size reduction of up to 40%, improved energy efficiency and reduced current consumption by 50%. The smallest resistor PROFET+2 device is an 8 mΩ dual channel switch BTS7008-2EPA with numerous protection and diagnostic features.

High-current PROFETs support up to 20 A DC load current in a small package that sets the industry benchmark

The new high current PROFET extends the flexible approach of the PROFET+2 family to achieve an on-resistance RDS(ON) from 8 mΩ to 2 mΩ in the same TSDSO-14 package. The high current PROFET in the TSDSO-14 package with a pitch of only 0.65 mm enables the world's lowest RDS(ON) as a single-chip switch. The TSDSO-14 is 50% smaller than the proven smart power switch in the DPAK package. Compared to D2PAK, its size is reduced by 80%. This product line is capable of efficiently driving high current loads. In addition, power consumption in the control module can be reduced by up to 60%. With its optimized features supporting 12 V high current loads, including diagnostics and protection, the product line meets the needs of a wide range of heating and distribution applications. They include glow plug controllers, PTC (positive temperature coefficient) heaters, starter relays, horns, trailer loads, and auxiliary power outlets.

The PROFET+2 and high current PROFET pin families are pin compatible and have the same main features. Its on-resistance RDS(ON) varies from 2 mΩ to 200 mΩ. Load current sensing accuracy (kILIS) of less than 5% at nominal current sets a new benchmark in the market. Its protection features include current trip, over temperature, over voltage, load dump and reverse battery function ReverSave?. Infineon is the first in the market to implement reverse battery protection in a single chip. Another functional benchmark is the starting voltage capability, which works well down to 3.1 V.

Supply and supplemental information

The PROFET+2 device BTS7008-2EPA (2x8 m?) began mass production. Engineering samples for the other switches in the two product lines are available for delivery and are scheduled to begin volume production in the fourth quarter of 2017. All high side switches are AEC Q100 compliant.
