Our team will make a new version in almost two weeks, We do it very quickly on the iteration side."
Five months, three major version updates
Currently, the version of the micro whale VR mobile app on the Android platform is 2.4, while the version on the iOS platform is 2.2. Regarding the product version update, Leon told me that so far, the technical team has mainly carried out three major version updates.
The first major update was in August this year. At that time, the technical team made a major adjustment to the arrangement and layout of the content, mainly adding the part of the recommended content every day. After the basic functions of the product are completed, the technical team begins to consider adding some elements of strong operation to stimulate the user's activity and guide the user's usage habits.
The second major update was in October this year. At that time, the technical team added an immersive mode to the APP, which is a UI in the form of VR. When the user clicks the "Immersive Mode" button on the APP, the user can enter the VR virtual scene of the split screen, and then the user can wear the VR glasses to select and watch the video content through the head control. Simply put, it is a one-click switch VR.
It’s also a coincidence, and the third major update is in this week in December. This week, the technical team will further separate the split-screen VR mode and the full-screen normal mobile phone experience in the new version. The two modes are completely separate in the new version, the interaction will be different, what will it look like, or wait for the new version to come out and download the update and experience it yourself.
Technology R&D and patent accumulation from content requirements
Because the micro whale VR itself has its own content team, the technical team will often communicate and cooperate with the content team to achieve continuous improvement of the user experience. "We have some exchange meetings every week. Everyone has some brains at the meeting to discuss what kind of content is user favorite, and what new forms are available."
For an introduction to technology development based on content requirements, Leon gave me an example. The video bandwidth requirement for panoramic video is several times that of traditional video. The content of micro whale VR self-made content is very high, but when the content reaches the user through the APP, the bandwidth requirement often exceeds the bandwidth level of the ordinary family. The result is the user. There will be a stutter when watching the video. In response to this problem, the technical team has developed an octahedral pyramid projection algorithm that saves video clarity while saving 30% of bandwidth. The concept of this algorithm was first proposed by Facebook, and we quickly implemented and applied it to the software. Micro-Whale VR has applied for the patent of this technology in China, and is at the leading level in the whole industry.
Another example is a feature that the technical team is developing. The micro whale VR will choose to watch the multi-camera in the VR live broadcast next year. That is to say, the user can choose to watch the VR live broadcast position in the app. Leon said that the biggest difficulty of this function lies in the network bandwidth and bit rate. How to realize smooth and seamless switching of multiple live streams while maintaining the clarity is technically challenging. At present, the technical team is working hard to overcome this. Technical difficulties. Leon said: "Once we solve this problem, we are equivalent to handing over the right to live broadcast to the user, and the user can get an immersive experience from all angles."
Rich content requires a simple UI interface to render
In terms of interface design, the micro whale VR mobile app adopts a simple style with a sense of technology. Leon said: "Our content is rich, but we have relatively simple UI interface, which is a development trend in the current design field. At the same time, our previous updates have received a lot of user feedback, we are about to In the new version, we will also have the function of questionnaires. We will understand what features users like and how we view our designs after the new version is launched. We have established a mechanism for quick feedback and modification with users, which is also a comparison. Comply with the rules of Internet product iteration and operation."
