Alibaba Cloud's IoT platform based on LoRa® devices and radio frequency technology is now commercially available

Semtech Corporation (NASDAQ:SMTC), a leading supplier of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors and advanced algorithms, announced on April 10 that Alibaba Cloud and China Unicom's Zhejiang branch will deploy LoRa® devices and wireless radios in Hangzhou and Ningbo, China. The technology (LoRa technology) IoT platform has now begun commercial trials.

Through the use of Semtech's LoRa technology, Alibaba Cloud plans to support a rich ecosystem created by LoRa-based sensors. China Unicom's Zhejiang branch will deploy a LoRa technology-based LoRaWANTM network in Hangzhou and Ningbo by mid-2018 to expand its range of Internet of Things services. This cooperation, which is initiated by three industry leaders, will enable users to more easily and quickly implement the Internet of Things solution (application) using low-power wide area network (LPWAN) solutions.

Alibaba’s vice president and general manager of Alibaba Cloud’s IoT Kuwei said: “Semtech's LoRa technology is a widely used Internet of Things technology that has been integrated in tens of millions of devices worldwide.”

Zhong Yongxin, deputy general manager of China Unicom Zhejiang Branch, stated: “In recent years, operators have been pushing for the deployment of the Internet of Things network. We believe that LoRa is a very good complement to the existing Internet of Things technology.”
