At 10:00 pm local time on March 18th, an Uber unmanned vehicle (automobile), traveling northward in Tempe, Arizona, at 40 miles per hour (about 64 kilometers) The speed hit a woman who was pushing the bicycle from west to east across the road. The woman died after being seriously injured. At the time of the incident, although the unmanned vehicle had a safe driver in the car, the vehicle traveled in an automatic driving mode.
The accident triggered a crisis of trust in autonomous driving technology. Is automatic driving really reliable? What is the reason for the drones to be murderous? Is there a distortion of humanity or a loss of morality behind all this?
Welcome to the Science and Technology Court, let the detective Wang Xiaohui analyze the murder of this Uber unmanned vehicle.
Let us first review the case (warning, the following screen may cause discomfort)

According to the video, the deceased first rides along the roadside before the impact, and suddenly gets off the cart and crosses the road (note: about 91 meters from the sidewalk), she strolled at least one lane and was just The unmanned vehicle that had passed the two lampposts and had its own headlights knocked down and was sent to the hospital and died.
First of all, we are responsible for both parties in accordance with the normal handling of traffic accidents.
The speed limit of the incident road was 56km/h, and the speed of the vehicle involved in the incident was 64km/h. The unmanned vehicle had a slight speeding, which was illegal;
Secondly, the deceased crosses the road at a position other than the sidewalk and marked with a warning sign. According to local laws, the unmanned car is entitled to the right of the road at the time, and the pedestrian is illegal;

It stands to reason that this should be considered as a traffic accident where both parties are responsible. Even the local police chief said that the preliminary investigation results indicate that the Uber unmanned vehicle may not be at fault in the accident, because the US law stipulates that the vehicle must not be too slow to block traffic. Therefore, a slight speeding is a very common phenomenon in the United States, and most police officers will not be too prosecuted. The deceased violated the law and crossed the road, taking full responsibility, and her death was self-defeating.
So Uber unmanned car is not guilty? Really? The truth is not that simple!
Let's go back to the incident again and notice that before the dead crosses the road and is hit by the Uber unmanned vehicle, the bicycle is at least one lane away. According to the video, the deceased should have been found 3-4 seconds before the incident. .
At that time, the unmanned vehicle was driving on the road at a speed of 40 mph (about 65 km/h). The distance of 3 seconds was about 54 meters, which means that the dead was about 54 meters away. If you brake at the time, you should be able to stop at a distance of about 2.4 meters from the person being hit.
In other words, the unmanned vehicle is fully capable of discovering the dead, making evasive and exempting the tragedy before the tragedy occurs!
But the car involved did not make any evasive action. What is the reason?
