Current, a subsidiary of GE, has cooperated with Hort Americas, a major American horticultural material manufacturer, to assist the greenhouse of Lufa Farms in Montreal, Canada to introduce LED lighting systems and successfully increase seedling output.
Founded in 2009, Lufa Farms can produce 75 kinds of vegetables throughout the year and provide 10,000 members for purchase. The founder, Mohamed Hage, established Lufa Farms with the hope to provide uninterrupted crops near people’s homes. But as demand expands, Lufa Farms hopes to introduce new planting methods to increase crop yields.
Since seedlings are the most vulnerable period in the growth process of crops, how to create an environment suitable for the growth of seedlings becomes the key to increasing yield. On the one hand, Lufa Farms hopes to increase production under limited space and lighting, but on the other hand, it is unwilling to sacrifice crop quality, so it cooperates with Current and Hort Americas to create a three-layer lighting system with 430 sets of GE installed. This lighting system can be adjusted in accordance with the different needs and growth conditions of various vegetable seedlings of Lufa Farms, increasing seedling production speed by 15% and increasing planting efficiency. At the same time, the Lufa Farms team pointed out that the improved growth environment of seedlings also makes vegetable quality relatively consistent.
