DIALOG multi-touch IC is adopted by Wistron Group

Dialog Semiconductor Co., Ltd., a provider of integrated power management, audio and short-range wireless technologies, recently announced that Wistron, the leading ODM manufacturer, has become the first of its SmartWaveTM multi-touch integrated circuits (MTICTM) client.

This multi-touch integrated circuit (MTIC) is the world's first chip that uses FlatFrog touch technology on mass-produced consumer electronics devices. The system can detect and track the multi-touch, gestures and force of sensing gloves and other objects with the help of edge-to-edge infrared glass inside the protective glass, thus providing users with a more natural touch Control experience, its performance exceeds the latest capacitive-based touch solutions, but the cost is lower than the latter.

For mass production all-in-ones and monitors, Wistron has developed a 23-inch SmartWave function touch module, which can directly replace the current projected capacitive touch module one-to-one. This provides OEMs with a low-risk, low-cost, and fast-to-market multi-touch technology without having to redesign the product.

Currently, other optical-based solutions require a bezel and cannot meet the performance standards of Windows 8. The DA8901 MTIC with FlatFrog touch technology can provide OEM manufacturers with a borderless embedded solution similar to capacitive touch. However, unlike the solution based on the capacitive solution, the DA8901 does not use an ITO layer, so it does not block or bend the light from the display. In addition, with an excellent browsing experience and Windows 8 certified quality, both ODM and OEM manufacturers can increase their penetration in the low-cost product market without compromising the performance of their products.

Mark Tyndall, vice president of global corporate development and strategy at Dialog Semiconductor Co., Ltd., said: "In less than three months after launching our first multi-touch integrated circuit, Wistron Group became the first ODM customer to adopt the product We are very happy about this. Wistron Group is a well-known manufacturer serving the world ’s leading PC brands. As a result, Dialog ’s mixed-signal chips will be deployed in a new generation of exciting all-in-ones and touch screens. Dialog ’s market diversification allows us to expand from the smartphone and tablet market to the mass PC market including ultrabooks. "

David Shen, President of Wistron Group ’s Digital Consumer Products Business Unit, said: “As a leading ODM manufacturer serving the world ’s largest PC brand, Wistron is able to provide our customers with the best technology at the right price and lowest risk, which is crucial . Through joint development with FlatFrog, we look forward to the latest touch module using Dialog MTIC technology to provide customers with a cost-effective and superior performance touch experience. Our first products are expected to be officially launched in January 2014. "

Dhwani Vyas, CEO of FlatFrog Laboratories, added: "We launched FlatFrog touch system solutions for mass-produced desktops, notebooks and tablets. This is due to our close cooperation with Dialog and Wistron Group. They ensured us The FlatFrog touch technology can be used in the mass production consumer electronics market. "

MTIC is suitable for today's portable computers, all-in-ones, ultrabooks, and monitors, and is optimized for 11-36-inch displays. MTIC can support up to 40 simultaneous touch operations. It uses FlatFrog's proven planar scattering detection (PSD) touch technology to detect changes in infrared rays injected into the display's protective glass and convert these changes into multi-touch coordinate.

One MTIC can directly drive 12 pairs of infrared LEDs, or control a large number of externally driven LEDs. Each chip can also process signals from up to 12 infrared receivers.

A typical ultrabook, tablet PC or all-in-one usually includes multiple MTICs configured in master-slave mode, which can meet the needs of screens of various sizes. Wistron's 23-inch touch module uses a total of 10 DA8901 chips, which can meet and exceed the quality certification standards of Windows 8.

DA8901 is available in 59-pin, 5.7mmX5.0mm QFN packaging. The product has the characteristics of small size and minimal external materials. It is very suitable for carrying LED transceivers, installed on a thin printed circuit board on the edge of the display, or installed on the lower part of the display to provide a borderless design. It is very suitable for Windows 8 personal computers, tablets and ultrabooks.

At the International Computer Show in Taipei this week, visitors will be able to witness the demonstration of the first 23-inch touch module using Dialog MTIC.

DA8901 MTIC will start supplying vector production in the third quarter of 2013.
