Researchers at Tokyo Institute of Technology and Nippon Oil Corporation of Japan have proposed that the OLED luminous efficiency can be improved by changing the surface structure of the OLED internal materials. OLEDs are typically fabricated from a very thin coating of organic material plus a glass substrate with a metal electrode over the organic coating. When the electrode is applied with a voltage, the coating of the organic material passes through the current to emit light.
Researchers say OLEDs are generally not efficient due to the refractive problems of glass and organic coatings. The key to their technology is to process the coating of organic materials and the surface of the electrode into small pleats, which improves the luminous efficiency of the OLED.
In the experiment, the professor of Tokyo Institute of Technology, Zhu Tianxiu and others, made the coating of the organic material and the surface of the electrode into rugged folds. As a result, the luminous efficiency of the OLED could be increased to about 2.9 times the original level.
