These days, Dongguan is preparing a “12th Five-Year Plan” strategic emerging industry development plan, which will focus on three major industries, namely LED, electric vehicle and high-end electronic information.

The development plan of the three emerging industries is undoubtedly a strong agent of Dongguan, which will greatly promote industrial upgrading and accelerate the pace of upgrading Dongguan from a traditional manufacturing industry to a high value-added high-tech industry. I happened to have researched the LED industry in Dongguan and would like to take this opportunity to share some views with you.

At present, Dongguan has initially formed a relatively complete LED industry chain. The data shows that as of the end of 2009, there are more than 70 companies engaged in LED lighting technology and product development, production and application, with an annual output value of more than 4 billion yuan. The products are distributed in substrate materials, chips, packaging, applications and supporting materials. The link has initially formed a complete industrial chain, and formed a certain industrial agglomeration in the middle and lower reaches of the industrial chain.

The LED industry has achieved the above achievements, mainly because Dongguan has the following advantages: the support of the industrial chain, the support of the municipal government, its special geographical location and the advantages of labor resources. The biggest advantage is definitely the supporting of the industrial chain. In 2008, Qishi Town officially won the title of “Guangdong Province Optoelectronic Industry Base”, which laid a good foundation for the development of LED industry in Dongguan.

How to do business opportunities on the chain is a problem that needs urgent attention in front of LED companies. The following points are the preparations that LED companies should do.

First, technical and financial preparation. As for the preparation of funds, the LED industry, as a high-tech industry, has a large capital demand and a high investment risk. It needs an innovative financing platform that integrates government, society and enterprises. More importantly, enterprises need to increase their efforts in technology and increase the proportion of independent research and development. At present, LED lighting enterprises in Dongguan are mainly Taiwan-funded enterprises. The source of technology mainly depends on Taiwan and lacks independent research and development system.

Taiwan's LED industry is relatively mature, and packaging technology is leading the world. According to the PIDA study of the Taiwan Optoelectronics Association, the output value of Taiwan's LED packaging in 2008 was NT$50.3 billion, which was approximately US$1.532 billion, second only to Japan's US$3.011 billion, ranking second in the global LED packaging industry. Dongguan relies on Taiwan's relatively mature LED packaging technology, and its packaging technology is relatively stable, but the R&D system is in Taiwan, which is not conducive to the sustainable development of the entire industry.

Second, the preparation of the brand and marketing. Dongguan LED lighting companies are mostly small and medium-sized enterprises, and there are not many companies with a certain reputation. There are less than 10 LED lighting companies with large assets and high reputation in Dongguan. They are mainly composed of Qinshang Optoelectronics Co., Ltd., Jiuxing Energy Saving Technology Co., Ltd., 100% Technology Co., Ltd. and Bangchen Photoelectric Co., Ltd. It’s just that the stars don’t see the moon. In order to enter the LED emerging industry, enterprises must have a strong sense of brand, can not be buried in the emerging industry market, and actively shout out their own voice.

In addition, in the promotion of products, the current international contract energy management model can be adopted. Contract energy management is a new energy-saving mechanism between energy-supply product suppliers and users. In layman's terms, it is a third-party independent operator that helps enterprises to carry out energy-saving renovation. In the current LED market, product manufacturers not only supply products, but also involve energy-saving transformation and operation of this field. Although this is beneficial to the economies of scale of product manufacturers, it also breeds problems such as product pricing confusion and product quality, which affect the development of the LED industry.
