According to Reuters, German chip giant Infineon Technologies has acquired Dutch electronics company Innoluce to further develop the company's autonomous vehicle sensor system. Innoluce is a miniature lidar scanning module design company.
The head of Infineon's automotive business unit said that the acquisition of Innoluce could help reduce the cost of optical and lidar sensors that can be used in production guidance systems for production vehicles. Infineon aims to make laser radar a widely available and affordable technology.
Lidar uses a laser beam to detect the distance of objects around the vehicle, allowing the vehicle control system to identify road conditions, traffic signals, head bridges and other obstacles. Early sensor devices developed by Silicon Valley company Velodyne were used by Google for autonomous vehicles, but the equipment cost $75,000.
The cost of the new version of the lidar sensor has fallen by 90%, and companies such as Velodyne and its rival Quanergy are working to lower their prices to a few hundred dollars. Innoluce manufactures a microelectromechanical system module that directs the laser beam of the sensor system.
Innoluce was previously stripped off by Philips. At present, Infineon has not disclosed the transaction amount of the specific acquisition. Infineon was founded in 2010 at Nijmegen in the German border of the Netherlands. Infineon's competitors in the automotive market include NXP Semiconductors and STMicroelectronics. These companies are struggling with the development of sensor control chips for self-driving cars.
