Recently, the circle of friends was swiped by the three major operators to announce the cancellation of long-distance roaming charges. First, telecommunications will be cancelled in July at the end of the year. Mobile also recently announced that it will cancel at the end of the year. In the first two days, Unicom finally could not hold back, indicating that the group-level tariff package will be cancelled in October. After all, it seems that cancelling long-distance roaming calls for so many years can finally be realized.
Wait, looking at this news, I always feel that something is wrong - now there are different packages for long-distance roaming? In the impression, then, one by one, I checked the packages of a dozen SIM cards one by one, all of which are long and mixed. I went to a number of operators’ official websites to find out what I really like.
However, I can also confirm that the three basic operators have launched local, long-distance, and roaming packages since the 3G era. At least, China Unicom's 3G and 10-year telecom 3G packages have been set up in 2009. There is no distinction between local and long-distance/roaming—yes, I have not encountered long distance and roaming charges for 7 years.
In fact, although each base operator has more or less retained the concept of long-distance and roaming, it is more differentiated on different packages: if it does not normally leave home, then choose a local package. Often contains more traffic and talk time, or local calls will be cheaper each minute; and if you are often in a different place, then apply for a national package.
However, these are all about the voice call level. We must know that with the popularization of WeChat and others, in addition to business people, the demand for voice calls has been greatly reduced. Coupled with the existence of corporate communications app such as Ali Pin, voice data revenue has long been not the bulk of operator revenue.
According to China Unicom’s official data, users currently paying long-distance roaming charges account for only 4% of all users. Cancellation or not, in fact, does not have a significant impact on operator’s revenue.
However, careful observation will reveal that, in addition to the virtual operators, the three basic operators in the cross-province (city) roaming traffic situation, far more complex than the voice calls. In addition to the local traffic packages of the provinces and cities themselves, many provincial and municipal operators also cooperate with mobile phone manufacturers or online video websites or apps such as WeChat to launch various so-called directional packages. And, these directional packages are basically exclusive to the province.
Of course, providing services by subdividing user needs is understandable. However, from another perspective, these intra-provincial (orientated) traffic packets are just a reprint of long-distance roaming in the era of voice.
Therefore, operators cancel the long-distance roaming charges, and more just declare the end of the traditional voice era, and operators have completely transitioned to the data era. However, in the data era, the gameplay of various operators does not seem to be smart. It took 20 years for China to cancel the long-distance roaming of voice. We do not know the data roaming. How long will it take to cancel?
