Bluetooth SoC chip battle: Bluetooth SoC battle is about to start

In order to snatch the IoT market represented by wearables, the Bluetooth SoC chip giant is engaged in fierce competition, and the product update is very fast. The vendors with large market share include TI, Dialog, Nordic, Qualcomm (CSR), NXP (QuinTIc), etc. .

With the release of Bluetooth 5 last June, a new Bluetooth SoC campaign is about to start. Today, Nordic Beijing held a press conference, officially announced that the nRF52840 and nRF52832 SoC and its supporting software are ready for Bluetooth 5. This means that Nordic will be one of the first vendors to offer Bluetooth 5 chips.

Why do I need Bluetooth 5? Careful friends may find that the "v" and the decimal point and the following numbers in the name of Bluetooth 5 have been removed by the Bluetooth Technology Alliance. This can be said to be an unprecedented update of Bluetooth. Compared with its previous version V4.2, Bluetooth 5 can bring twice the data transmission speed, the transmission speed limit is 2Mbps; the data transmission capacity is increased by 8 times; not only that, the transmission distance of Bluetooth 5 is increased by 4 times. In theory, the effective working distance between Bluetooth transmitting and receiving devices can reach 300 meters; these features make Bluetooth wireless technology more suitable for smart home, wearable devices and IoT applications.

Nordic has been preparing for a long time.

Nordic is a Norwegian fabless semiconductor company specializing in unlicensed 2.4 GHz and industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) bands below 1 GHz, and commercial LTE telecom for IoT and other unlimited applications. The frequency band provides ultra low power (ULP) and low power wireless communication technologies.

In 2016, Nordic recruited top talents from engineers from Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and Broadcom to develop a range of technology products for IoT in smart home, industrial automation, healthcare and medical testing.

"The world's first SoC that fully supports Bluetooth 5 and supports longer distances and higher throughput versions."

Based on Nordic's existing nRF52 family of SoC architectures, the nRF52840 SoC supports complex low-power Bluetooth and other low-power wireless applications not previously possible with single-chip solutions. The SoC uses Nordic's nRF52832 SoC's 64MHz, 32-bit ARM® CortexTM M4F processor, which inherits a rich CPU of general-purpose processing power, floating point and DSP performance.

Compared to Nordic's existing nRF52832, the nRF52840 SoC's hardware enhancements include: a new radio architecture with a PA (power amplifier), a significant increase in output power, and an increase in link budget "whole house" "Application; flash doubles to 1 MB, RAM memory increases 4x to 256KB; supports Bluetooth 5, 802.15.4, ANT and proprietary 2.4GHz wireless technology; full-speed USB 2.0 controller: a large number of new including quad SPI interface Peripherals (many have EasyDMA). The nRF52480 can also be powered by more than 5V, such as rechargeable batteries.

The nRF52840 also offers the industry's best security ARM® CryptoCell-310 accelerator with a wide range of encryption and key generation and storage conditions.

It is worth mentioning that the nRF52 and nRF51 series are based on support for low-power Bluetooth, ANTTM and 2.4GHz proprietary RF protocol stacks and IEEE802.15.4-based protocols such as nRF52840's Open Thread, Zigbee, WirelessHART, RF4CE, 6LoWPAN, etc.

In terms of software development, Nordic will release S140 SoftDevice at the same time as the nRF52480, which is the latest product of the Nordic RF software protocol stack. The S140 SoftDevice is a Bluetooth 5 compliant software stack that supports Bluetooth 5's long range and high data processing capabilities.

Nordic developers said: "The long-distance mode of Bluetooth 5 includes two new data rates of 500kbs and 125kbs. Using the relevant code in the radio, they significantly increase the distance by a factor of 4. Combined with the maximum output power of the Nordic nRF52840, you can Achieve a total link budget of approximately 111 dBm. This increase is significant compared to previous versions of the Bluetooth standard, making Bluetooth 5 a true choice for home and house coverage applications that must pass through walls and objects."

At last

Bluetooth 5 is the industry's turn to Bluetooth leaps and bounds. In the market, Samsung's new flagship Galaxy S8 is now the world's first Bluetooth 5 certified mobile phone. I believe that more Bluetooth 5 devices will spring up in 2017. Although there are very few devices supporting Bluetooth 5, if you buy a product with nRF52480 SoC in the future, you will only need to upgrade your firmware to enjoy the new features and features of Bluetooth 5 when Bluetooth 5 is popular.
