Design: High-efficiency power driver for LED street lights (with photos)

1 Introduction

In recent years, with the development of high-power white LED technology, the lighting industry is beginning to face new opportunities and challenges. LEDs are increasingly being used in general lighting, and road lighting is one of the most important applications. Due to the long life and potential high luminous efficiency characteristic of LED itself, it is especially important to design a high-efficiency constant current driving power supply that can fully utilize this feature.

2. Design and analysis of high efficiency LED power driver

2.1 Design Overview

In this power supply design for LED street lamps, the characteristics and requirements of this application must be fully considered:

1) The maximum power of a single lamp does not exceed 100W.
2) In order to improve the availability of street lamps, the LEDs in the luminaire are divided into several groups. The LEDs in each group are driven in series, and the groups are driven separately. The single group damage does not affect other groups of LEDs.
3) For added safety, electrical isolation between input and output is required.
4) The power supply needs to have a high power factor.

In order to meet the above requirements, this design uses ACPDC constant voltage power supply and multi-channel DCPDC constant current drive cascade to drive multiple LEDs.

The ACPDC part uses a flyback topology with an output of 52V and 100W.

The DCPDC part uses the national half-LED constant current driver chip LM3404.

This article only covers the design of the AC/DC section.
