Nokia joins Ericsson and Intel to create the ideal wireless connection

Nokia, Ericsson and Intel Corporation announced today that they will support NB-LTE (narrowband LTE) as the ideal wireless connectivity solution for the growing Internet of Things (IoT).

NB-LTE is an optimized version of the widely deployed 4G LTE technology. It is low-cost, easy to use, and energy efficient, making it ideal for the Internet of Things. Nokia plans to work closely with Ericsson and Intel to develop and launch NB-LTE commercial products.

Stephan Litjens, vice president of Nokia's communications strategy, said: "We believe that building an ecosystem around NB-LTE will accelerate the popularity of the Internet of Things and bring many advantages to customers, such as enhancing and improving the interconnection between devices at a lower cost. Nokia's The goal is to improve human life by building a “programmable world” of billions of people, objects, sensors, and devices interconnected. This collaboration is a re-extend of this goal.”

Thomas Norén, vice president of Ericsson and head of product management at the wireless business unit, said: "The cellular network now covers 90% of the world's population, and we can use it to support and promote IoT adoption through NB-LTE standardization. Ericsson is working closely with Intel and Nokia. Collaborate to advance ecosystem development to accelerate IoT growth and provide a global foundation to support the development of a broader range of new IoT applications for consumers, industry and government."

In order to support the commercial deployment of NB-LTE technology, Intel plans to implement the NB-LTE chipset and product upgrade roadmap in 2016, which will make it possible to build thinner and lighter devices. These new products will be added to Intel's growing portfolio of LTE products. Nokia and Ericsson will provide the necessary network upgrades to support the expansion of existing LTE networks using NB-LTE, which is optimized for low-power machines.

Stefan Wolff, vice president of Intel's platform engineering division and general manager of the multi-communication business unit, said: "We are pleased to partner with Nokia and Ericsson's two leading network vendors on next-generation wireless innovation to provide connectivity and further connectivity to the growing Internet of Things market. Enhance Intel's LTE portfolio and drive the NB-LTE roadmap."
